What you will learn during these 3 days

Simulation-based education (SBE) is increasingly being integrated into health professions education curriculum, and the need for qualified instructors continues to grow. As SBE needs specific facilitating skills, this course focuses on providing participants with the knowledge and skills in the overall design, delivery, debriefing and evaluation of SBE in an educational and clinical setting.

Objective 1 :  Understand the concept of Simulation-based education (SBE)

Simulation-Based Education (SBE) is an innovative teaching method that immerses learners in realistic scenarios replicating real-world challenges.

This module introduces the core principles of SBE, emphasizing its role in enhancing practical skills, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities. By using simulations, learners can safely experience and manage complex situations, gain hands-on experience, and receive immediate feedback for improvement.

This approach not only bridges the gap between theory and practice but also fosters a deep understanding of subject matter through experiential learning. Ideal for a wide range of disciplines, SBE is a powerful tool in modern education, preparing students for real-life challenges in a controlled and supportive environment.

Objective 2  : Design and deliver simulation-based scenarios using best practices in SBE

Objective 2 of the course delves into the design and delivery of simulation-based scenarios, guided by best practices in Simulation-Based Education (SBE).

This module focuses on the intricacies of creating authentic and effective simulations that accurately mimic real-life situations. Participants will learn how to craft detailed scenarios, select appropriate simulation tools and technologies, and implement these scenarios in a way that maximizes learning outcomes.

Additionally, this module covers essential skills in facilitation, debriefing, and feedback, equipping educators with the tools to guide learners through the simulation experience effectively and foster a reflective learning environment. This module is crucial for those looking to elevate their SBE practice to a higher standard of excellence.

Objective 3  : Design and deliver procedural skill training using best practices in SBE

This module provides comprehensive insights into developing training programs that effectively teach and refine specific procedural skills. Participants will learn to craft realistic and detailed simulations that replicate the challenges and nuances of actual procedures.

Emphasis is placed on selecting appropriate simulation technologies and tools that cater to the unique demands of different procedures. The module also covers best practices in structuring training sessions, including the use of progressive difficulty levels and incorporating hands-on practice to enhance skill acquisition and retention.

Key elements such as providing constructive feedback, facilitating debriefing sessions, and ensuring a supportive learning environment are also explored.

Objective 4  : Demonstrate skills required of a debriefing facilitator in a safe environment

This module is centered on cultivating the skills necessary to be an effective debriefing facilitator in Simulation-Based Education (SBE). It emphasizes the critical role of debriefing in the learning process, where participants reflect on the simulation experience to consolidate learning and identify areas for improvement.

The module guides learners through the various techniques and strategies of debriefing, highlighting the importance of creating a safe, non-judgmental environment that encourages open discussion and self-reflection. Participants will learn how to facilitate debriefing sessions that are structured, objective-focused, and learner-centered, ensuring that they are constructive and lead to meaningful learning experiences.

Skills such as active listening, asking insightful questions, providing balanced feedback, and managing group dynamics are covered. This module is vital for anyone aiming to master the art of debriefing in SBE, ensuring that learners can effectively translate their simulation experiences into practical knowledge and skills.

And much more …
